Located in the rolling hills of Fallbrook, in North County San Diego, the AMATI Farm is filled with mature myrtle plants that grow the flavorful berries that make AMATI California Mirto. San Diego is a Mediterranean climate and so it proves to be the ideal place to grow this native Mediterranean bush.
The farm first began in the year 2000 growing cut-flowers and foliage for the floral industry, including Eucalyptus, Myrtle, Protea and Australian Wax Flower. One year, the farm didn’t get a chance to prune down the myrtle plants and so they began flowering and fruiting for the first time. Seeing the plentiful myrtle berries emerge, AMATI’s owner, Shailesh Trivedi, did some research on the Internet and discovered that an Italian liqueur called Mirto could be produced from these berries. He immediately set about to make some Mirto, and it tasted delicious, and so the journey to create AMATI began.
AMATI California Mirto is truly farm-to-bottle, transforming a local, drought-tolerant crop into a world-class libation. Myrtle berries require minimal water compared to other crops, such as avocados, and also minimal fertilizer and NO PESTICIDES, making it a very friendly crop for humans and the environment. And by buying local, consumers help minimize carbon pollution and preserve farm land. See the pictures below of the myrtle berries being harvested.
